to jim lehrer? he might as well not even showed up last night. he lost control of the debate and mitt romney ran all over him like a truck crushing a bug. we don't need a moderator for the next debate. we didn't have one last night. we'll talk about it, who won who lost, is it going to change anything. first, let's take a little time out to get the latest, today's current news update as always from lisa ferguson out in los angeles. hi lisa, good morning. >> hey bill, welcome back. it is a good day to be back. good morning everyone. with the first debate under their belts the candidates are back on the campaign trail today. president obama starts out where he left off in denver then he heads to madison wisconsin. joe biden is in iowa and mitt romney is in virginia. but who wants to talk about all of that when what you really want to talk about is the debates. a lot of claims thrown around last night. we're going to do some fact checking for you this morning. but first let's start out with a bit of a recap.
jordan is in baltimore where health officials just released the new details. >> reporter: jim, this is typically used to treat back pain, but now several people have died, one in maryland and one in virginia. doctors here say they've been able to pinpoint a two-month time frame where this injection was distributed and they think they know where it came from. >> we were notified by centers for disease control -- >> reporter: the state department of mental health and hi hygiene say patients are at risk of having meningitis. a facility in massachusetts where the injections were mixed and shipped out. there, doctors believe a fungus contaminated the product. nine facilities received shipments of the questionable steroid injections. >> this case, there were human cases, and it was tracked back to the product. >> reporter: the meningitis outbreak has reached six states with five deaths, but doctors fear the number of those with meningitis may get higher. >> we believe that there are probably hundreds of patients who may have received an injection, and those cases are currently under
for the next debate. it's a must-win state to capture the white house. jim acosta is traveling with romney for us. >> reporter: fred, mitt romney is wrapping up a three-day campaign sweep through florida. the part was in debate prep and this is in port st. lucie, florida in front of an estimated crowd of 12,000 people. of course, over the last couple of days we heard mitt romney continue this victory lap after what was widely perceived to be a big victory in that first presidential debate. earlier this morning on the sunday talk shows, top obama campaign strategists went after mitt romney accusing him of making false statements. today in port st. lucie he fired about. >> you heard his answers or nonanswers. of course days later we hear his excuses, and next january we'll be watching him leave the wlous for the last time. >> reporter: next romney heads to virginia for a major foreign policy speech at the virginian military institute. after that the gop nominee will campaign in more critical battleground states like ohio and iowa. fred. >> thanks so much, jim. >>> for both presidential campa
affairs. 45% say romney. cnn national political correspondent jim acosta is at the virginia military institute where romney will speak in just a little over two hours. good morning, jim. >> reporter: good morning, carol. that's right. after what was widely perceived as a big victory for mitt romney on the issue of domestic policies at that first presidential debate, he's going to be going after the president on foreign policy at that speech at the virginia military institute here in lexington later on this morning. and the campaign did release some excerpts from the speech that we could look at to sort of see where he might be going with this address later on this morning. a few things to point out, carol. he's going to be going after the president as you mentioned just a few moments ago on those diplomatic attacks in benghazi, libya. he's going to be talking about that attack as the work of al qaeda, saying that that was likely the work of the same forces that attacked the united states on september 11th. now, a few other things he's going to be talking about. he's going to be calli
and instead listen to substance. i appreciate the fact athat jim lehrer asked questions about substance. i appreciated that i was able to ask obama about obamacare. i asked, why is it that the middle class is still buried in this country? why we have millions of people out of work? why is it that half of our children coming out of college cannot find a job? why is it that when he took office, 32 million people are on food stamps? i asked him those questions. you heard his answers. as a result of those answers, the american people recognize that he and i stand for something very different. i will help the american people get good jobs and a bright future. [cheers and applause] even more importance than what was happening in the past was what he plans on doing for the future. he had the chance to describe his vision for the future. what it was was more of the same. he described a series of ideas that we have heard before. he talks about a stimulus and hiring more government workers and having the government making investments. of course, he talks about raising taxes. they plan to raise taxes
allen and jim vandehei write but maybe there's a straining to find a more biz zanty explanation than is necessarily the case. to question that ann romney was unhawpe with what was happening to her husband as any reasonable wife would be, given the way he was being portrayed and allowing people to portray himself. there's, you know, losing campaign, which the romney campaign was until the debate in denver, there's always a lot of second guessing and it started early in this campaign. she clearly has made her feelings known in a very direct way. the part of the story about tagg romney's involvement which is that he's playing this much bigger role in the campaign, i'm a little more dubious about that on the basis of some of my reporting but i think there's no question that his family has been much more involved in general over the course of the last month than it had been for the last year and a half. >> so this rumor that stu stevens has been elevated to the sidelines poppy cook. >> i'm comfounded of references of stu stevens because i don't know who that is. but yes, no in terms of st
of it. obama cares on my list. i use that term respectfully. i'm sorry, jim, i'm going to stop the subsidies to pbs. i like pbs and big bird and i like you, too, but i'm not going to keep spending money on things i have to borrow money to pay for it. martha: big bird woke and heard that. users posted 17,000 big bird tweets a minute. one such account @firedbigbird. bill: a year ago in a conversation with governor romney he said when i get one-on-one in the president he's going to say x and i'll say y. he will say "a" and i'll say "b." that was a year ago. he has been waiting a year. if you look at these snap polls. oftentimes this is an emotional reaction. whether it's cbs or cnn there was a clear winner in this debates. martha: governor romney had take and lot of heat from conservative watchers of all of this who said he had yet to make a passionate conservative argument throughout the course of this campaign. i think those folks will be satisfied with what they saw last night. he was ago that and connected to what he was saying. he made his points. and he turned that key in a
